PREVENT

What is Prevent?

Prevent is part of the UK’s strategy for countering terrorism and aims to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. The strategy addresses all forms of terrorism across the extremism spectrum; from extreme far-right to Daesh or Al-Qaeda inspired groups and from domestic to international terrorism.

The Prevent strategy focuses on three key areas:

  • To respond to the ideological challenge of terrorism and the threat we face from those who promote these views.
  • Prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and make sure that they are given the right help and support.
  • Work in partnership with sectors and institutions (including education, criminal justice, faith, charities, online and health) where there are risks of radicalisation that we need to address.

The Counter Terrorism and Security Act 2015, places a duty on local authorities and statutory bodies to have ‘due regard’ to safeguard vulnerable individuals from being drawn into terrorism. This is known as the Prevent Duty and Asby Endowed School has a responsibility to do this.

Prevent is part of the Asby Endowed School's safeguarding objectives to keep vulnerable children and adults safe from harm and exploitation. The local Cumbria Prevent programme is designed to work closely with families, the local community and professionals to help build resilience against the threat of radicalisation.
