Today, Thursday, 22nd February, the whole school visited Bolton Wanderers FC as part of the Avanti West Coast Feel Good Field Trips.
We first caught the train to Preston from Oxenholme and then transferred trains to Bolton. We were meet at Bolton Wanderers FC by the community team. We had an all access tour to the stadium, followed by lunch and then team building activities.
Travelling by high speed train was a first for many of our children as well as visiting a large sporting arena.
Thank you for a great day Avanti West Coast and Bolton Wanderers in the Community!
Today the class 1 children had a great time improving their golf skills at Appleby Grammar School Sports Hall. As well as mastering basic skills, they also enjoyed mixing with children from other local primary schools.
We are delighted to celebrate all of the hard work the children have put into achieving our Green Trees School Gold Award. The children have worked incredibly hard, giving up their own time to gain the award during after school club sessions. The after school club is very well attended and all children in the school have attended these sessions, working towards achieving this award.
The children from Reception to Year Six have worked hard completing a range of activities including woodland art, wellbeing activities and learning about woodland in Shakespeare. They have enjoyed their work so much they are keen to take on the challenge of achieving the platinum award, which we feel is no easy feat!
The award has helped the school environment by being more mindful about our recycling and carbon footprint. As a school we are dedicated to educating children about how to look after our environment and learning about the benefits of nature. We are lucky to have a beautiful setting in the countryside and we need to look after our surroundings so it can be preserved for future generations.
On Monday, 22nd January, the children admired a great selection of horse brass, learning about their use as decorations for harnesses. They also handled a variety of horseshoes, understanding how they were designed to prevent breakage and excessive hoofwear.
The children put their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills to use by designing and creating their own amulets using a variety of natural materials, including feathers, rosemary and white bell heather.
In the second half of the afternoon, children were shown a range of maps from stories, including one about local kelpies. After this, they were asked to draw their own maps, from a bird's eye view. This activity reinforced previous learning about map-reading and allowed them to create their own world, with rivers, forests and mythical creatures.
On Monday, 15th January the children were joined by Chloe, an archaeologist from Carlisle as part of the Epona Project. With Chloe, the children had a whistle stop tour of the last 10,000 years of local history. They learnt about different archaeological sites as well as handling different artefacts.
The children in Class 1 and Class 2 enjoyed a visit from Louise, who delivered a Water Workshop to each class. The workshops highlighted the importance of water and not wasting it. The children learnt all about where water comes from, why water is important, how we can save water, and how to ‘stop the block’. The children all went home with free goodies, including a timer to remind them about saving water in the bathroom. The children also made a ‘Water Saving Promise’ which they are going to try and keep.
The children enjoyed a special afternoon in St. Peter’s Church with Andi from NISCU. Andi retold the Christmas Story, using props placed around the Church. The afternoon was completed with a craft activity. A great afternoon was had by all.
The children have been working really hard with Mrs Capstick in Forest Schools on Thursday after school club and have been award the Green Tree School Silver Award.
Well done!
Class 1 children had a wonderful afternoon at Bankwood Farm, Appleby, learning all about habitats. They began by colouring in an animal mask. They then classified their animals into groups, looking at the similarities and differences between them. This was followed by a trip to the woods to discover the plants and animals that make their home in the woods. After careful observations using magnifying glasses, the children then made their own ‘bug hotel’ to take home. They also made a bird feeder using pine cones, lard, nuts and seeds. The afternoon was completed with a story.
