  • St Peter’s Day

    Thu 30 Jun 2022

As the 29th of June was St Peter’s Day, the children enjoyed learning about the history of St Peter whilst creating some art with Andi from NISCU. We had to use our Bibles to find out why he is so important to Christians;  discover the meaning of his name and our names; and build a raft.

Our books were decorated using pastels and baby oil. Each section had a piece of art or a photograph to help tell the story of St Peter. We took these with us to a special service at the church. As part of the service the children sang The Wiseman Built His House Upon the Rock.

  • Great Asby weather station

    Fri 24 Jun 2022

As part of our weather topic, Class 1 walked to Piers Palmer’s house in the village to look at his weather station.  Piers has been recording the weather in Great Asby for almost 20 years.  The weather station records wind speed, temperature and rainfall. Piers explained to the children how the weather station works and the children asked some interesting questions.  You can visit http://www.greatasby.co.uk to take a look at the weather conditions in Great Asby.

  • Edible Gardens

    Fri 24 Jun 2022

The children have been enjoying their Edible Gardens topic in DT. It is always good to be able to make something you can actually eat.

First of all, they planted some herbs which are now growing in our school garden. They had to prepare the pots and sow the seeds.

In week 2, they got to make and taste pesto. Not everyone liked the final result but they all had a go.

This week, it was strawberry smoothies. The children learned about the health benefits of strawberries and the parts of a strawberry plant. They kindly let the adults have a yummy cup of smoothie to drink as well.

On Thursday afternoon Year 6s from Asby, Warcop, Bolton, Crosby Ravensworth and Long Marton came together to get to know another a little better ready from moving to their secondary schools in September.

They enjoyed singing, forest school activities and s’mores all topped off in glorious sunshine!

  • Y5 & Y6 Day at Ullswater Community College

    Thu 23 Jun 2022

Yesterday, our Year 5 and 6 children were invited to Ullswater Community College for a day of Science, English & Art. They enjoyed being put in a group with children from other local primary schools for the activities.

First of all, they had to design protection for an “astronaut” egg to be launched into “space”. It required collaboration and cooperation to try and succeed - they weren’t very successful!

The next mission was to extract DNA from a mystery “space” fruit (strawberries). This helped them to learn about secondary science experiments.

After lunch, the English department gave them a lesson in which they wrote a poem about fire and flames. They then used the inspiration for this to create a piece of ceramic art which will be displayed at UCC.

  • School Vegetable Patch

    Mon 20 Jun 2022

Over the last few weeks, the children have been working hard to create their own vegetable patch in school.  They have been busy weeding, planting, and watering.  This week, the fruits of their labour paid off, as they were able to eat the first crop of radishes.  It was mixed reactions - some children loved them, some were not so keen!

  • Teeth and Eating

    Mon 20 Jun 2022

The children in Class 1 have been learning about ‘Teeth and Eating’ in Science this half term.  This afternoon we looked at the ‘Eatwell Guide’.  The children then enjoyed tasting some of the foods!

  • Camping day 2 - Raft building

Sun 19 Jun 2022 Michelle Clark

On day 2 of camping we spent even more time in the water, but this time the children were split into 2 groups and working as a team they had to design and make a raft.

Both rafts were successfully launched and mannered a maiden voyage!   However we are not too sure they would have survived a second outing!

  • Fun in the river!

Fri 17 Jun 2022 Michelle Clark

On Friday, 17th June, the whole school went camping!  On Day 1 we had  fun in the river!  There was lots of laughter and splashing!

  • Bright Stars Coffee Morning

    Fri 17 Jun 2022

The children would like to thank everyone who came to our Centre for Excellence Bright Stars coffee morning in aid of Carlisle Eden Mind. Thanks to all the generous donations and the contribution of Community Champions Morrison’s, Kendal we were able to raise an amazing £185.71 to help this important local charity. Thank you to DIffAbilityCIC for the support and advice on helping us to have such a successful morning.

We all enjoyed being able to chat, play games and show other adults our work. We hope they had enjoyed themselves too and liked the delicious cakes we had made.
