  • Easter Journey

    Thu 31 Mar 2022

Today the children were taken on an Easter journey at St Peter’s Church with Andi from NISCU and some of the parishioners. They learned about the events from Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem through to Easter Sunday.

  • St Peter's Church Easter Window

Wed 30 Mar 2022 Michelle Clark

The children have been working hard with Mrs Harrison to create our Easter window for St Peter's Church.

Please pop into the church and take a look at their fantastic work.

  • The chicks have hatched!

    Tue 29 Mar 2022

There was great excitement in school today as the eggs began to hatch.  The children have been looking after the eggs in the incubator for the last 21 days, taking turns to turn the eggs daily and monitor the temperature.  All their patience has been rewarded today as the chicks hatched out of their shells.

The children are experts at looking after the chicks, and are enjoying the noisy new additions to their classroom!  We shall look forward to observing their development as they grow.  Keep an eye out for future photos!

  • A visit to Appleby Fire Station

    Thu 24 Mar 2022

Class 1 are designing and making Fire Engines as part of their D&T topic this term.  To help them with this, they visited Appleby Fire Station this week.  They were warmly welcomed by Fire Fighter Abbie, who gave the children a wonderful tour of the Station.  They were able to sit in the Fire Engine and Wildfire Land Rover, and Abbie expertly explained to the children all about the equipment kept onboard.

Class 1 then tried on the protective equipment (PPE) used by firefighters.  It wasn’t long before they wanted to take off the PPE as it was extremely warm and heavy!

To finish off the visit, the children had great fun aiming the fire hose at buckets and bottles. All the children managed to knock them over with the water!

  • Day Two at Hawse End

Thu 17 Mar 2022 Jack Davis

After a long day yesterday, we all (mostly) had a good night’s sleep and woke up feeling refreshed and excited. For breakfast, we had cereal to start, followed by bacon, hash browns and tomatoes; vegetarian members of the group had eggs too.

Once we had eaten our fill, we split off into our two groups and walked up Catbells, which is the fell right behind the activity centre. Group 2 walked around the fell before summitting and walking down the ridge. Although it was windy and wet at the top, we worked as a team and kept everybody safe! Meanwhile, Group 1 took a different route and – despite the fact that they didn’t make it to the top – they enjoyed themselves and still experienced the activity of fell walking. Mr. Davis and Mrs. Law are very impressed with everyone’s perseverance and resilience today.

Following a packed lunch - which we had made ourselves - Group 1 went canoeing and Group 2 went ghyll scrambling. We were very tired after the morning’s activities but everyone took part and gave their all.

At the time of writing this, we are about to eat our dinner, finish last night’s quiz and write in our diaries – the children are all looking forward to showing off their writing! Tomorrow, we will be taking part in archery and problem solving, before jumping on the bus home. Behaviour has been impeccable and our Year fives and sixes have been a credit to the school.

  • Day One at Hawse End

Wed 16 Mar 2022 Jack Davis

On Wednesday morning, Mr. Davis, Mrs. Law and five Year 5 and 6 children departed for Hawse End. Along with children and adults from Bolton and Crosby Ravensworth, we traveled along the A66 and arrived at around 10:30. We had a brief orientation talk and walk to get to know our surroundings, before taking part in a half-an-hour long orienteering session. At the end of this, we all felt settled and used to our new surroundings!

Once we had eaten our packed lunches in the common room, we split off into two groups of 11 and 12; two of our children are in Group 1 with Mrs. Law and the other three are in Group 2 with Mr. Davis.

Group 1 children went Ghyll scrambling! They got off the bus and promptly entered the water at the bottom of the stream. Following this, they walked up the river to a waterfall, where they took part in a challenge to put their heads underneath the waterfall - both children took part in this with varying levels of enthusiasm. After the challenge, the children waded (and swam) through some deep water. They were all soaked at the end of this but spirits were high!

Group 2 stayed on the banks of Derwent Water, where they took part in a canoeing activity. We split off into two sets of canoes and tied them together to make two rafts. After this, we had a chance to practice our skills in the water before paddling along the lake to an inlet. Here, we played games, including tag and 'catch the paddle'. We eventually paddled back to the starting point, returned to the lodge and - most importantly - warmed ourselves up.

We have only had one meal so far but the children have all demolished their spaghetti bolognese. Tomorrow, we look forward to walking up Catbells as well as ghyll scrambling for Group 2 and canoeing for Group 1.

  • School Hike

    Wed 09 Mar 2022

Today, the whole school went on a hike up Orton Scar led by Rob from Wilderness Outdoor Education. We walked from the school, through the village and up bridleways and paths.

On the way Rob pointed out things such as lime kilns and the remains of Iron Age settlements. The children enjoyed watching a farmer spreading slurry on their field.

After reaching High Pike, we found a sheltered place by a wall for an early lunch and hot chocolate. Then it was a hike across the limestone pavement to reach the nature reserve and then walked back to Sayle Lane.

On the walk back to school the children helped collect a whole wheelie bin’s worth of litter.

In total they walked 14.5 km or 9 miles!

  • Planetarium Visit

    Fri 04 Mar 2022

The whole school visited Kirkby Stephen Grammar School today as the Friends of the Lake District were celebrating that the Westmorland Dales area is a Dark Skies area. We were being encouraged to look at the wonderful night skies we get in this area as we do not have light pollution.

Richard took us on a journey around our solar system and told us lots of amazing facts about the other planets. Did you know that if you went to Venus the weight of the air would crush you?

Then we were shown how to spot some of the main star constellations that we can see from our own homes.

  • Illuminated Bibles

    Thu 03 Mar 2022

The children had a lovely morning working with Andi from NISCU. They learned about illuminated bibles and then created their own pieces inspired by these.

In their sketch books they tested out some ideas before using a page from a bible for their final piece. They sketched out a letter, added some embellishments and then used pens and ink to add colour.

Didn’t they do a fantastic job?

  • Four legged friends!

    Wed 02 Mar 2022

Former Asby Endowed pupils Alice and Thomas Harrison made a visit to school today, and brought with them four border collie puppies!  Alice’s own sheep dog ‘Nell’ recently gave birth to the pups.  Alice intends to keep one of them, and train her up to become a sheep dog on the farm.

The visit was enjoyed by all!
