Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school!
On Friday, the children walked to the edge of the village to join the Asby Tree Group in planting 80 hazel trees. One of our families own a field which is being planted with trees to benefit wildlife and soak up some of the water.
The children were shown how to plant a sapling by the experts. Then the Year 6 boys led teams of children to get the job done. They had to work together to get the trees in the ground safely.
Once all the trees were in the ground, they had to be protected. So, the children placed the tree protectors on them and had to carefully tighten the cables.
It was a very muddy session but very satisfying. Most of the children will have left the school by the time the trees are fully grown. They will be able to see the difference they have helped make in a few years.
As a school, the children have created a list of words that are the values we should all aspire to at Asby Endowed School:
These are combined to say “Your vibe attracts your tribe!”
Yesterday, Andi from NISCU came in for an art workshop to create a banner showing all of these values. She took inspiration from Psalm 1 and the artist Hannah Dunnett to design a banner for the children to finish with hot wax and inks. Everyone also added a heart to the tree. The final piece is now on display in our entrance hall.
Whilst waiting for their turn to work on the banner, the children painted their own water colour versions of the picture. Then they chose some of the values to add to their pictures.
Today we had a special assembly with one of our local First Responders. They taught the children basic first aid skills and CPR. Living in a rural area it is vital that the children know from an early age what to do. We think they will be well equipped to cope with any accidents after this session.
The children had a fantastic day learning survival skills with our Outdoor Education instructor Rob. They learnt what they would need to survive in the Arctic or the Jungle. He taught the children different ways of lighting a fire, which was then used to make hot chocolate and toast marshmallows. The children then built shelters suitable for an Arctic or Jungle adventure.
